This series consists of seven giant bolo ties installed to float in space. Each sculpture ranges in size from 5- 7 feet tall. Broadly this work engages in conversations about representation, visibility, and innovation. More specifically this body of work is inspired by the Iroquois’ seventh generation principle which states that, “the decisions we make today should result in a sustainable world seven generations into the future.” While beading the medallions and braiding the leather ropes by hand I was asking myself, what does a bolo tie symbolize in popular culture? And what does it mean to take this historically charged symbol and transform it from necklace to noose?
