Making the Disposable Sacred

This series consists of four beaded dust masks installed in a row. In general these sculptures engage in conversations about climate change fashion and environmental justice. More specifically this work responds to the #NODAPL movement and the 2016 events at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in the United States. While beading these masks I was asking myself, what is the significance of turning something that is meant to be used once and thrown away into something of greater value?
